(1) Compassionate Futures. Dismantling the Dynamics of Power and Violence in Human-Animal Relationships International Conference

Bartzelona, 17-19 June, 2025
Auditorium – Poblenou Campus – Universitat Pompeu Fabra
Compassionate Futures: Dismantling the Dynamics of Power and Violence in Human-Animal Relationships is a critical exploration of the multifaceted power structures that govern human-animal interactions and the ethical imperative to reimagine these relationships with compassion at the forefront. This conference will bring together scholars, professionals, and advocates from diverse fields to engage in a thorough examination of the social, political, economic, and cultural forces that continue to perpetuate the exploitation, oppression, and marginalisation of non-human animals (NHA hereafter).
The event aims to dissect the mechanisms by which humans assert dominance over NHA, from legal frameworks and economic interests to cultural narratives and institutional practices that sustain speciesism. In analysing these dynamics, we will interrogate how power operates to maintain the objectification and instrumentalization of NHA, often for human benefit, while reflecting on alternative pathways rooted in justice, empathy, and ethical responsibility.
Central to this conference is the exploration of how to distinguish between genuine ethical progress and superficial humane-washing. Humane-washing, often used to placate public concern, obscures the persistence of exploitative practices while allowing industries and institutions to maintain business as usual under the guise of reform. The conference will critically engage with the strategies and narratives that perpetuate this deception and, importantly, will highlight pathways to promote authentic, transformative change in how we relate to and treat NHA.
The conference also seeks to foster interdisciplinary dialogue on the intersectionality of animal oppression with other forms of violence and discrimination, such as racism, sexism, and environmental degradation, highlighting the importance of solidarity across social justice movements. By dismantling the dynamics of power and violence that structure human-animal relationships, Compassionate Futures envisions a world where NHA are recognized not as objects, but as subjects deserving of respect, dignity, and compassion.
Ultimately, this event invites participants to reflect, collaborate, and contribute to the creation of a more just and compassionate future for all beings, with a particular focus on identifying and overcoming the many strategies that simulate progress while obstructing real and transformative change.

(2) Annual Meeting of the International Association of Vegan Sociologists

…what we feel is fully as important to the outcome of social affairs as what we think or do
Arlie Hochschild (1990, p.117)
Sociologists have long understood that the social world it not a solely rational place: it is messy, it is interactional and it is felt. Emotion management has a key role in supporting both work done to nonhuman animals (e.g. animal testing, fHarming, slaughter), and for nonhuman animals (e.g. activism, caretaking, critical animal research).
Increasing acknowledgement of the emotional and sensory experiences of nonhuman animals opens up exciting new avenues through which to better understand and challenge their exploitation. Here, methodological and theoretical innovation provides key resources for vegan sociologists to expand their toolkit.
In the 2025 meeting of the International Association of Vegan Sociologists we invite participants to consider how emotions and sensory experiences are integral to understanding and challenging nonhuman animal exploitation.
Potential topics include (but are not limited to):
- Nonhuman animals as minded, feeling beings: how are animals’ emotions or sensory experiences minimised or acknowledged in society and/or vegan sociology research?
- Veganism, activism and emotional labour: How do activists navigate the emotions involved in advocating for other animals? What role does emotional labour play in vegan activism?
- Socialisation of emotions & animal exploitation: How are emotional norms or ‘rules’ around nonhuman animals socialised in ways that challenge or support vegan ways of being?
- Sensory experiences and the Body: how can vegan sociology help us to explore human and nonhuman animals’ felt experiences of the social world?
- Vegan Sociological perspectives on particular emotions: e.g. how might explorations of disgust, desire, grief, joy, sadness further our work for nonhuman animals
- Innovative research methods for exploring sensory elements of the multispecies social world: e.g. Emotional/Sensory mapping, visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory methods
- Representations of nonhuman animal emotions: ‘happy’ exploited animals, suicide food, attempts to build empathy
- Digital emotions and online vegan communities
- Intersections of species, race, gender, and emotional politics
Title: Senses & Emotions

(3) PASE 2025/Crossroads 5 ConferenceVoices of the Earth: Literary and Linguistic Perspectives in Environmental Humanities

June 4-6, 2025
University of Białystok, Poland
Deadline: March 1, 2025
Contact email: voicespase2025@gmail.com
Suddenly, we became aware that humans could destroy the livability of the planet—whether intentionally or otherwise. This awareness only increased as we learned about pollution, mass extinction, and climate change. One half of current precarity is the fate of the earth: what kinds of human disturbances can we live with? Despite talk of sustainability, how much chance do we have for passing a habitable environment to our multispecies descendants?Anna Tsing
Traditional scientific approaches provide important information on climate change and environmental degradation; however, they typically fail to address the underlying cultural, ethical, and philosophical dimensions of such crises. These are deeply interwoven with economic and political agendas, and thus need multifaceted solutions. Environmental humanities connects diverse fields, enabling dynamic and interdisciplinary dialogue, which is essential in enhancing scientific efforts and promoting comprehensive solutions to intricate global challenges. Through the examination of cultural narratives, historical patterns, linguistic frameworks, and ethical discourses, environmental humanities enables us to reevaluate our connection with nature. By exploring the potential for composing a common world that unites both human and non-human entities, environmental humanities encourages a holistic understanding of our place within the ecosystem.
We welcome papers on literature, language, and culture that address questions broadly related to environmental humanities. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- environmental harm/environmental justice/catastrophes and pandemics,
- ecological issues and enduring legacies of racism, enslavement, and colonialism,
- encounters between environmentalism and feminism,
- interrelationship between race, gender, poverty, and ecological concerns,
- climate migrations/climate trauma,
- natural landscape, landscape modification, ruins, spaces of abandonment,
- postnatural fiction, novels of the Anthropocene, Cli-Fi, extinction narratives, etc.,
- representation of objects/matter/non-human others in discourse,
- Indigenous knowledges and practices,
- ecodiscourses, practices of making and communicating ecological knowledge,
- media systems and artifacts embedded in ecological relationship,
- ecological analysis of language, ecostylistics,
- eco-translatology,
- ecological approach to teaching and learning, ecopedagogy, ecoliteracy,
- language ecology: language diversity, minority languages.

Monografikoak
